With the College Football Playoff taking the place of the BCS, creating a new trophy was a must. The BCS was blessed with an iconic Waterford crystal football, immediately recognizable for excellence in college football, though it was fragile.
Opting for a more sleek, modern approach to the trophy, the College Football Playoff national championship is a cylindrical, metallically modern obelisk forged from 24-karat gold, bronze and stainless steel. The trophy, which will apparently remain sponsorless, is two-feet tall, weighing in at 35 pounds – the same weight as the Stanley Cup.

The only issue with the trophy, other than the sheer newness of it, is its shape. The crystal football made sense. This trophy does not. What does it look like? I don’t know but I have a few ideas:
- Lipstick
- Waffle cone
- Olympic torch
- Shoehorn
- Cheerleader’s megaphone
- Fish and chips newspaper roll up thing
- Vase
- Draft beer tap
- A Sigur Ros album cover
- A deflating hot-air balloon
- Imitation World Cup trophy
