Seeing as “Best Weekend Ever” morphed into “Best Weekend Ever … to get things done around the house while boring college football games dot the weekend,” there aren’t many changes in the conference rankings, but the show must go on. If not, who would the 20 people who read this do for 2-minutes extra this week?
As always, this is all in fun, and all wins and losses are based on perception, not actual game play. After all, that’s how college football often rolls.
1. Big Ten
It wasn’t the most charming of weekends for the Big Ten, going a Ten High smooth 1-3 against P5/AAC teams and lost to an FCS team. By the way, the one win? Over Iowa State, another team that lost to an FCS team. The upper crust still looks way-upper, though, and I don’t know how much we’re really expecting out of Purdue and Illinois this season as they rebuild. Penn State, though, made Pitt look like the 2007 Patriots. That’s a problem for them in the East. The only reason they stay here is because no one played anyone, anywhere.
Best win: Maryland over FIU (seriously)
Worst loss: Illinois State over Northwestern
Perception Game of the Week (PGOW): Ohio State @ Oklahoma
2. SEC
The beloved SEC moves up a tinge from last week, mostly on account of being 2-0 against other P5 teams, specifically powered by Arkansas going into TCU and winning. Note: don’t take Arkansas to overtime. Every. Their coach is too awesomely crazy to lose ’em. The other big win was Tennessee spending most of the first half looking like a drunkard on roller skates before thumping Virginia Tech of the ACC by 21 in the end. Also, no one in the SEC lost. Even though Georgia tried.
Best win: Arkansas over TCU
Worst loss: Georgia over Nicholls State (kidding)
PGOW: Alabama @ Ole Miss (remember, Ole Miss lost to FSU)
3. ACC
You’ve got to hope Clemson was nursing a bad hangover after going into Auburn, Old Camp Whiskey style, in their 6-point home win over Troy. Pitt and North Carolina had nice wins over Big Ten foes. NC State had one of those losses that isn’t good or bad but it would be if they were elite. And then you’ve got Virginia, where their current coach was NOT a cop. They’re struggling.
Best win: Pitt over Penn State
Worst loss: Tennessee over Virginia Tech
PGOW: Pitt @ Oklahoma State
4. Pac 12
The Pac moves up like cashier at Wal-Mart to toy department manager mostly because the only other guy who put in for the job just got put in jail. It was nice to see them getting started on basketball season early, with ASU knocking off Texas Tech 68-55. Utah had a nice win over BYU. That was pretty much the end of it. Arizona looked awful against Grambling in a 10-point win. USC bounced back though, I reckon.
Best win: Utah over BYU
Worst loss: San Diego State over Cal
PGOW: Oregon @ Nebraska
5. Big 12
ABORT MISSION, WEEK 2! Oklahoma State shouldn’t have lost to Central Michigan (like, technically shouldn’t have, not opinion shouldn’t have), but they did. Kansas proved once again they’d get housed in the MAC. Then top-15 TCU lost to Arkansas at home. Texas Tech lost the aforementioned basketball game to ASU. Maybe they’ll schedule football next week. Tis the season, and all. The Big 12’s conference press releases for the week should read, “hey, Shane Buechele is really good!” and then probably end.
Best win: Texas over UTEP (not kidding)
Worst loss: Central Michigan over Oklahoma State
PGOW: Ohio State @ Oklahoma
