It was Separation Saturday, and with six games pitting Top 25 teams against each other, there were bound to be some sad football fans after this weekend.
One team found a way to lose in overtime, one team fumbled a snap as it was driving to try and win the game, and another had a player who forgot that the football had to cross the goal line in order to score a touchdown.
Let’s take a look at the teams that have the most to be sad about after the events which unfolded this weekend:

No. 1: Auburn Tigers
The Auburn Tigers came into this past Saturday’s game ranked No. 3 in the country and were a 23.5-point home favorite against the struggling Aggies of Texas A&M. I guess that’s why they play the game. The Aggies jumped out to a lead, and although Auburn caught up at times, A&M seemed to always be one step ahead. Auburn had a chance to win at the end, but its luck ran out on a botched exchange between the quarterback and his running back, followed by an even more improbable miscommunication between the center and quarterback.

The Tigers weren’t supposed to beat Alabama, but in the second half it felt like they had the Tide right where they wanted them… and then it all slipped away.

No. 3: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Notre Dame might have been higher on this list, but the Irish got beaten so quickly and so thoroughly by Arizona State, I’m not sure they even had time to be sad. Yes, Notre Dame did make a big comeback, but Arizona State so thoroughly rebuffed that rally in the final six minutes that the intensity of Notre Dame’s sadness didn’t reach a higher (or lower, as it were) level.
