TSS Roundtable: The Biggest Surprise Team in College Football Will Be…

It’s never too early to start talking about college football, which is why our staff will continue to discuss some of the hottest topics in the game today. After discussing the best and worst coaching hires of the offseason, we’ll be discussing our surprise teams for the 2016 campaign. Question: Which team will be the […]

Georgia Should Name Jacob Eason its Starting Quarterback

Georgia’s spring game reaffirmed what many of us already knew: Jacob Eason should be the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs in 2016. This comment is almost certain to raise a few eyebrows. After all, Greyson Lambert went 10-2 as the starter for UGA last season. In addition, Brice Ramsey – the backup quarterback last fall […]

TSS Roundtable: The Best Offseason Coaching Hires

Even though the start of college football season is more than five months away, it’s never too early to start discussing the 2016-17 campaign. Throughout the offseason, senior writer Kevin Causey will join associate editors Bart Doan and Terry Johnson to discuss or debate what’s going to happen on the gridiron this fall. They’ll kick […]

Reaction to the Illinois coaching situation: Wait and see

Wait and see. That’s my advice to everyone watching the Illinois coaching situation. Let’s be honest: that won’t be an easy thing to do. When I first learned that new athletic director Josh Whitman fired Bill Cubit, a number of different things crossed my mind. Was it right for Whitman to dismiss Cubit without even […]

Clemson’s defense dominates, making the Tigers favorites in the CFP Championship Game

Led by a smothering defense, Clemson is going to play for its first national championship since 1981. Based on what we saw against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, it looks like the Tigers are going to win it. Make no mistake about it: this was an outstanding performance by the Tigers. After all, Oklahoma entered […]

Toledo caps a successful season with a victory over Temple

In its first game under new head coach Jason Candle, Toledo capped off a very successful season. The Rockets also gave us a glimpse of what appears to be a very bright future for the program. Make no mistake about it: the 2015-’16 campaign was Toledo’s best in over 15 years. Sure, the Rockets failed […]

Rich Rodriguez now faces the central task of making sure his players don’t lose faith after a classic Arizona stomach-punch loss against USC. The one original Pac-10 member without a single Rose Bowl appearance has to stay the course. If it does, the Pac-12 South is still there for the taking. The winner of this division will probably have at least two conference losses by season’s end. Arizona can overcome just about any scoreboard obstacle, but the Wildcats’ offense needs to be able to score more than 13 points through three quarters at home. The Wildcats were stuck on 13 after 45 minutes in home games against California and USC. The Wildcats overcame the Golden Bears. They weren’t able to make one last kick against USC. Start-to-finish consistency on offense is what Rich Rod has to cultivate over the next month and a half.

Rich Rodriguez was right to turn down South Carolina and stay at Arizona

Rich Rodriguez did the right thing by turning down the South Carolina job. Had he accepted the job, it would have been an even bigger mistake than bolting West Virginia for Michigan. Make no mistake about it: South Carolina isn’t the glamorous job some in the media are making it out to be. Sure, it’s […]

Syracuse Hires Dino Babers as Head Coach

The ACC’s head coaching vacancies have all been filled. On Saturday, just hours after Virginia hired Bronco Mendenhall as its new head coach, Syracuse made its move. The Orange hired Dino Babers to be their next football coach. Babers succeeds Scott Shafer, who had been the Orange’s head coach since 2013. In his three seasons […]

Kirby Smart: possibly the next Mark Richt, probably the next Will Muschamp

How quickly things change. At Mark Richt’s farewell presser on Monday, Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said the school was going to use search firm to find its next head coach. Less than 48 hours later, it appears UGA has its man. According to Chip Towers of AJC.com, the school has hired Alabama defensive coordinator […]

Georgia should be careful what it wishes for in firing the under-appreciated Mark Richt

There’s an old adage that goes, “be careful of what you wish for because you just might get it.” That’s what happened in Athens, Georgia, on Sunday. Despite finishing with a 9-3 record – which is no small accomplishment considering that Dawgs lost their top running back midway through the season – the University of […]
