Neutral parties with an awareness of the history of UCF football were happy for the two black-shirted figures in this picture… but not the gold-shirted figure with white hair on the left.

O’Leary Denies Report that He’s Stepping Down

You’ve got to love social media. In the age of Facebook and Twitter, we have instant access to news as it develops. Unfortunately, social media can get things wrong. Earlier today, reports surfaced that UCF head coach George O’Leary was going to step down at UCF this year. George O’Leary is considering stepping down at […]

7 Tackle Breaking TDs

Believe it or not, college football starts just two weeks from today when Sam Houston State faces off against Eastern Washington. With that in mind, it’s time for me to continue my 7 Plays That Will Get You Ready for College Football Series. This week’s edition will feature tackle breaking TDs… with a few ankle-breaking […]

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

Poll: Should Power 5 Schools Play Only Power 5 Opponents?

If the so-called “Big 5” autonomy vote today passes (as expected), should the power 5 conferences only play each other? ESPN conducted a poll of the Big 5 coaches last month to ask that very question. Here are the results in a nutshell: In

2014 Sun Belt Preview

With FBS college football scheduled to start in less than three weeks (Georgia State hosts Abilene Christian on Aug. 27), it’s time to make some preseason predictions. Today’s edition breaks down what I think will happen in the Sun Belt in 2014. As always, if you disagree or want me to comment on anything further, […]

The National Football Foundation released a document today highlighting the key rule changes for the 2014 season. For the most part, the changes are designed to correct the mistakes associated with targeting penalties. Report: UNC Whistleblower Accused of Plagiarism

In somewhat of an ironic twist, Mary Willingham — the main whistleblower in the alleged UNC academic scandal — has been accused of plagiarism in her master’s thesis, according to a report from the Raleigh News and Observer. While I encourage you to read the entire article, the report doesn’t look too flattering for Willingham. Rather […]

It’s so easy to think that Steve Spurrier loathes Dabo Swinney and has no respect for him or Clemson University. Does Spurrier hate losing and a poor read by one of his quarterbacks? He and his visor tell you all you need to know. Does he hate his opponents and the people who represent them? The zingers and laugh lines are almost always meant in a spirit of fun… and it’s that spirit of fun which has enabled Spurrier to last this long in the coaching business with a lot less of the strain that wears on so many of his contemporaries in college football.

Breaking Down Spurrier’s Comments About the Big Ten

You’ve got to love Steve Spurrier. Only the Ol’ Ball Coach could stir up such a hornet’s nest on an otherwise dull Sunday. When asked about the South Carolina Gamecocks’ non-conference schedule, Spurrier offered up the following pearl of wisdom: “The Big Five conferences all playing each other, I don’t think that makes a lot […]

The introduction of semifinals before a national title game? Very, very good. The process by which the four College Football Playoff teams will be chosen? That’s not likely to be as satisfying or clear-cut for all parties involved.

Coaches’ Poll Reaction: It’s a Show About Nothing

USA Today published the initial Coaches’ Poll on Thursday. Within moments of its unveiling, articles went up all over the blogosphere discussing what the poll actually meant. Believe it or not, it doesn’t take much to break it down for you. In fact, I can do so using the wit and wisdom of George Costanza: […]
