Scenario: Chaos ensues in the Pac-12. Florida State gets ambushed. It’s 11-1 TCU versus 11-1 Alabama for the fourth playoff spot. Alabama might deserve the bid, but the TSS editors agree: If the Crimson Tide get the nod, they need to get the nod because they’ve earned more on the field, not because the wear the Alabama brand name and carry the SEC label. Reputation-based, television-friendly selections that diminish a less prominent team’s body of work would send a chilling message through the non-SEC precincts of the college football community.

Fisher, Saban Point to Fundamental Change in College Football

Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban are two of the best coaches in college football, and their paychecks reflect that. Each has won a national championship in the last three years. Both their teams made the inaugural College Football Playoff last season. You’d think both would be pretty content with where the sport is right now. […]

Big 12 Should Change Conversation About Championship Games

Now that the Big 12’s head honchos have smartly rebuffed commissioner Bob Bowlsby’s entreaties to re-institute a conference championship game, they can move on to what should be their next order of playoff business. The question of whether the lack of a championship game constitutes an advantage or disadvantage in positioning for the College Football […]

Ranking the Big 12 coaching jobs

The kind folks at Athlon Sports asked me to participate in an experts poll ranking the Big 12 coaching jobs. (Insert joke here.) You can find the results here. For the sake of conversation, here’s how I voted. Note that I based my rankings on the question of where I thought I could win the […]

Baylor, which was torn to shreds by UCF in the 2014 Fiesta Bowl, badly needs to beat Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl — not only to bolster the Big 12 in comparison with the Big Ten, but to avoid an 0-for-2 albatross in premium postseason contests.

Don’t Bank on Big 12 Adding a Championship Game

In a move sure to be dubbed as Prop Ronald Reagan, conferences are preparing to “deregulate” their championship games, according to a report from Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com. The news naturally raises the question of whether a title game is coming for the Big 12. The 10-team league co-sponsored the measure with the ACC, so […]

I gave you my five favorite bets of the first round last week and hit on three of five against the spread. Let’s see if we can do some regressing to the mean for the Sweet 16. Utah (+5.5) vs. Duke Honestly, I left the Utes for dead not too long ago. Larry Krystowiak got […]

NCAA Tournament: 5 Favorite First-Round Bets

Countless recreational gamblers are making their annual pilgrimage to the desert this week, ready to lay down cash they will likely never see again on basketball games played by 19-year-olds they probably couldn’t pick out of a lineup. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, might I suggest these five wagers in […]

Solving the Conference Tournament Conundrum

Belmont and Murray State staged the best game of the entire season Saturday night in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament final. Unfortunately, the wrong team won. Murray State had a perfect record of 16-0 in conference play this season. Yet, CBS will probably be showing America a room full of dejected Racers next Sunday when […]

Freshmen Ineligibility and the Business of College Basketball

The recent talk of making freshmen ineligible for men’s basketball and football got a little more serious Thursday, when word leaked out that the Big Ten actually is giving the idea some thought. Given that commissioners Bob Bowlsby of the Big 12 and Larry Scott of the Pac-12 also have discussed the idea lately, it would […]

Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino will get to coach against an SEC East team for the second straight game. He jumps from Kentucky to Georgia, and both games carry quite a lot of significance for the Cardinals. One was a rivalry game; this one is a little more personal, with UL defensive coordinator Todd Grantham being the center of attention.

Moral Hazard and College Football Recruiting

Let’s say Johnny Five-Star is deemed the consensus-best football prospect in his home state after his sophomore season of high school. In the summer before his junior year, he gets the call he’s been waiting for his whole life. It’s Coach Seven-Figures offering him a scholarship to come play football at State U. Mr. Five-Star […]

Do you have to run the spread to win big in the Big 12?

The big story at Texas since Arkansas eviscerated the Longhorns in the Texas Bowl has been the hard charge being made by Charlie Strong toward the finish line on national signing day. The wooing process led to a revelation that was overshadowed by speculation about five-star studs and a turf war with Texas A&M. After […]

Sterling Shepard signs with the Oklahoma Sooners on national signing day in 2012.

The early football signing period is a solution without a problem

As Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com reported Monday, it would appear that college football is finally going to implement an early signing period for high school recruits. Momentum for the change has been building for years as competition for prospects has ramped up with the evolution of technology. Even after recruits have made verbal commitments to […]

Can Jim Harbaugh be a success running the Michigan program he once played for? (Photo by Focus on Sport/Getty Images)

Jim Harbaugh to Michigan: Where There’s a Will…

Under the current paradigm of college football success, Michigan is not a great job. It’s located in a region of the country that is bleeding jobs and people. The weather sucks. The Wolverines play in a punchline of a conference. In the era of realignment, we’ve moneyballed college football by fixating on proximity to recruits […]

Where will Mike Gundy coach in 2015? The outcome of the 2014 Bedlam game could very well provide the answer.

Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State: Evolving Power Dynamics in College Football

After reading Oklahoma State athletic director Mike Holder’s recent comments about Mike Gundy, it would be hard to imagine a more bizarre working relationship in major college athletics. The money passage from Holder’s interview with NewsOK.com columnist Berry Tramel: In the past, Holder and OSU coach Mike Gundy have disagreed over scheduling. Gundy prefers a […]
