Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

5 Reasons Ohio State Will Beat Michigan State

Whoever said patience is a virtue apparently wasn’t a college football junkie, or a sports fan in general. Finally, mercifully, the big one is almost here. We’ve been looking forward to the Ohio State-Michigan State game since the kickoff of the college football season, and although it’s lost a little of its mojo because of […]

Group of Five Power Poll After Week 11

Once again, this week’s Group of Five Power Poll is a day late because of #MACtion on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Since two of those games had a profound impact on the rankings, it was only appropriate to wait one day. As always, remember that these rankings are fluid, and will change from week to […]

Case Studies: South Carolina

This is getting to be a thing, to use the peculiar phrase. For two straight seasons, the South Carolina Gamecocks have misled the nation by providing an aberrational season-opening result, followed by a result against Georgia which did not fit with the rest of the SEC season. South Carolina offers lasting proof that September is […]

Case Studies: Georgia Tech and Duke

We’re nearing the end of the college football regular season. Accordingly, we’re in a much better position to evaluate teams. More precisely, we’re in a better position to not merely figure out where things went right or wrong, but why teams followed a given path. Two of the foremost examples from the Atlantic Coast Conference […]

Gary Patterson can only look forward. If he looks back, he and his team might become a pillar of salt against an Ole Miss side which has absolutely nothing to lose in the Peach Bowl.

History Says TCU Plays Oklahoma Tough

Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding, Jr. were showing us the money in the hit film “Jerry Maguire.” Hootie and the Blowfish won a Best New Artist Grammy after giving us a peek through their “Cracked Rear View.” Slick Willy Clinton rolled through his Presidential re-election bid. The year was 1996, and in Norman, Oklahoma, Sooner […]

The 3 Biggest Things the CFB Playoff Committee Got Wrong This Week

There’s the oft-overused “low hanging fruit,” and then there are vultures. If you ever watch vultures, they’re painfully lazy. They hang around areas where stuff gets run over for the most part, and as if to not tax themselves too much, wait for it to be dead, and then go eating. A car whizzes by, […]

2015 TSS Heisman Poll, week 11

Two weeks ago, the Heisman Trophy race suffered a shake-up when Leonard Fournette and LSU fell to Alabama. Despite that loss, Fournette managed to keep his spot at the top of our poll. This past weekend, LSU lost once again, this time to Arkansas. Fournette failed to reach the 100-yard mark for the second straight […]

Kentucky runs past Duke in early season battle

Tuesday night in Chicago, college basketball observers gained a lot of information on two of the superpowers in the sport. The big question is if Tuesday’s revelations will still hold true in the middle of March… and perhaps early April. * In the first heavyweight contest of the season, Kentucky showed that it is clearly […]

Brian Kelly’s work with Notre Dame this season should not be overlooked

Love him or hate him for his sideline antics, Brian Kelly has done some amazing things with Notre Dame over the years. Keeping the Irish in the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings this late into the season certainly rates as one of them. With the Irish contending for a College Football Playoff […]

What the Selection Committee Taught Us: Week 11

We noted last week that the committee has not been wholly consistent in how far down teams move after suffering a loss, though we can begin to note a pattern this week. Six ranked teams lost last week. Once again, some of them fell further than others. In general, it feels like the amount a […]

With Lopsided Losses, LSU Turned Into Fool’s Gold This November

Unlike many sports that feature more scheduling balance or overall parity, college football reveals itself in November, the denouement of a season that can vary wildly month to month. While some teams seize on that truism and find an identity after early setbacks (see: Oklahoma, Washington State), the month often exposes as much as it […]

College basketball’s new points of emphasis are reshaping the sport

Outrage flooded the NBA when the “Hack-a-Shaq” took effect. During the last few years, the same outrage has followed in the NBA playoffs when teams would foul poor free throw shooters to gain possessions. In the first few games of the new college basketball season, we’re seeing something different. What’s happening on the hardwood is […]

4 College Football Thoughts, November 17

Your weekly college football ramblings from yours truly, which basically is code for, “none of these are worth a full article, but I still need to complain about them.” Enjoy. We’re adding a “beer of the week,” just in the event people get through it all and want some sort of reward for suffering through. […]

5 coaches most likely on the move this winter

This season has been unlike any other in terms of coaching vacancies. We are still three weeks from the end of the regular season, but there are already a dozen coaching vacancies, from the bottom of the Group of Five in North Texas and Louisiana-Monroe, all the way up to one of college football’s most […]

Week 12 Sampler Platter: The Road Narrows
