Thou shalt not doubt Charlie Strong

The underbelly of success is always going to be deference to the greater good. Texas dropped Notre Dame 50-47 in fitting fashion on a quarterback who lost his job to a freshman, relegated to a glorified running back, obviously coming in to stick it right between a tackles and still doing it. This team has […]

Mississippi State lays egg against South Alabama

Mississippi State was worse than bad. The projections for the Bulldogs were way down from the last few years, but the display of mediocrity put on by State was as poor as could be. Against a South Alabama team that was preseason #7 in the Sun Belt, the Bulldogs surrendered a 17-0 halftime lead, gave […]

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

ANN ARBOR, MI – SEPTEMBER 03: Wilton Speight #3 of the Michigan Wolverines celebrates a first quarter touchdown pass to Grant Perry #9 while playing the Hawaii Warriors on September 3, 2016 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. (Photo by Gregory Shamus/Getty Images)

Wilton Speight gets the nod at Michigan. And by the way, they’re good.

We all should have known the guy with the odds-on shot at the job to be Michigan’s starting quarterback would be a Jim Harbaugh doppelganger. All joking aside, junior quarterback Wilton Speight getting the nod for a team expected to make a playoff run is noteworthy in a game that otherwise was only noteworthy in […]

Early season upset? There could have been an App for that.

When opportunity comes knocking, you answer the door, so to speak. Some of us, though, either are outside and don’t hear the doorbell, are in the bathroom and can’t get to the knob in time, or figure it’s not worth it to get off the couch and answer. They’ll go away. College football’s first night […]

Tennessee Volunteers do the only thing that matters, beats Appalachian State

It wasn’t pretty, but the Tennessee Volunteers did the only thing that really mattered on Thursday night: they earned a victory over Appalachian State. That’s not to say that the Vols’ performance was perfect. It clearly wasn’t. Tennessee shot itself in the foot in the first half with costly turnovers and penalties. The Mountaineers took […]

Tennessee underwhelms in season debut

Dreams are what we aspire to achieve, but their very existence is tenuous at best and can be destroyed in an instant. The nightmare sits ever present, right beside the dream, ready to pounce and tear it apart. Which brings us to Thursday night in Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee was looking to rise back to national […]
