Notes and Observations

  • As always, remember that these rankings are fluid, and will change from week-to-week.
  • Alabama remains at No. 1 this week after an impressive 10-0 win over LSU on Saturday. The Crimson Tide received 3 of 5 first-place votes and finished with 78 points out of a possible 80.
  • Thanks to a 59-3 blowout victory over Maryland, Michigan moved up to No. 2 in this week’s poll. The Wolverines also picked up a first-place vote for the first time this season.
  • Clemson moved up to No. 3 after shutting out Syracuse 54-0. This was the first time in five seasons that a Dino Babers-coached team failed to score.
  • Washington was the only other team to receive a first-place vote. Regardless of what the talking heads at the four-letter network say, our panel believes that the Huskies are in the College Football Playoff if they win out. Considering how well UW played against California on Saturday night, that scenario seems very likely.
  • Likewise, Ohio State controls its own postseason destiny. Sure, the Buckeyes lost to Penn State, but that loss didn’t really hurt them. As long as OSU wins out, it’s in the College Football Playoff. And, while we encourage you not to watch Tuesday’s night selection show (Yesh Ginsburg will tell you what you need to know), don’t be surprised if the Bucks are in this week’s top 4 after they demolished Nebraska.
  • Unlike the AP and Coaches’ polls, we actually punished Texas A&M for losing to unranked Mississippi State. The Aggies dropped seven spots to No. 14.
  • Florida and Nebraska dropped out of the poll after falling to Arkansas and Ohio State, respectively.
  • Penn State made the biggest move in our poll this week, jumping from “also receiving votes” all the way to No. 10. However, the Nittany Lions were also the most polarizing team in the rankings, appearing as high as No. 8 on two ballots, while failing to appear in the top 16 on another.
