With the Atlanta Braves moving to the suburbs many wondered what would happen to Turner Field in downtown Atlanta. The Georgia Dome, home to the Atlanta Falcons and also where the Georgia State Panthers play, will also be giving way to a new stadium. This left Georgia State looking for new digs and there were rumors about Georgia State playing at Turner Field.
According to the AJC, those rumors are now reality….
The announcement comes just a little more than two months after the agency put the ballpark up for sale through a competitive bid process, and about two years after the Atlanta Braves announced their plans to move to a new ballpark in Cobb County.
The Carter-Georgia State team plan involves a $300 million mix of student housing, apartments, retail and the conversion of Turner Field into a football stadium. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed publicly endorsed the Georgia State team when it first announced its interest in the site early last year.
Georgia State has struggled in fan attendance in their brief history. They made steps this season to improve fan interest by winning six games and going to their first ever bowl. The addition of student housing and apartments near the stadium could definitely help with some of their attendance issues. Georgia State head coach Trent Miles has the team headed on the right track in what has been a long journey and now it appears they have found a home for their future.
