Villanova fans honor Big 5 tradition with streamer toss

Villanova’s men’s basketball team does not start its season until next week, but that did not stop fans from honoring a long forgotten tradition during an exhibition tonight. Wildcats coach Jay Wright encouraged fans to throw streamers onto the court after Villanova’s first basket. The fans obliged.

The throwing of streamers to celebrate the first basket is something of a time-honored tradition among the Big 5 schools in Philadelphia. Jonathan Tannenwald of Philly.com once called it the greatest tradition. Unfortunately, this tradition was put on ice for the most part in 1985 following some NCAA regulation regarding the throwing of objects on the court. But tonight is simply an exhibition, and Wright was begging for it. No real harm here.
