The tweet below doesn’t even begin to do this play justice.
Up 14-13, Utah’s Britain Covey caught the ball nine yards deep in the end zone. Rather than take a knee, he advanced the ball forward as though he was going to run it out of the end zone. Then, he fired the ball across the field, an attempted lateral which tried to spring a big play.
Unfortunately, he threw the ball forward, which is illegal. Since he did so in the end zone, it resulted in a safety.
I don’t know what was more bizarre: the play itself or the decision to use trickeration when the defense was taking care of business.
