Jumbled Big XII looks for clarity in important weekend slate

Prior to the games tipping off on Wednesday night, Kansas’ streak was in real jeopardy.

The Kansas State Wildcats defeated the Jayhawks 70-63 on Monday night, jeopardizing the decade-long Big 12 regular season title streak that the Jayhawks are holding onto.

Prior to Wednesday night, Kansas (22-6, 11-4) and Iowa State (20-6, 10-4) were tied in the loss column and Oklahoma (19-8, 10-5) was just a game behind first place. The Sooners will have a lot to say about the final standings, as their final two games are on the road at Iowa State and home against Kansas.

Before Wednesday night, it was possible that Kansas could have to win its final three games just to share the title with Iowa State.

But then Wednesday night happened.

Baylor went into Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa and left with a nine-point victory. Five-straight three-point attempts went through the basket in a less than three-minute span to put the Bears up for good with less than five minutes in the game. The Bears (21-7, 9-6 Big 12) shot 14 of 26 from 3-point range and became the first team other than Kansas to win in Ames since 2012.

Iowa State, West Virginia and Oklahoma are all 10-5 within the conference, one game behind the Jayhawks.

Kansas has two games at home against Texas and West Virginia before finishing up the season on the road at Oklahoma. Kansas now controls its own destiny to keep the streak alive.

With only a few Big 12 games to go, let’s look at a few of the games with the highest average ticket prices this weekend, according to Totally Tickets.

2/28/2015 | Texas Longhorns at Kansas Jayhawks | Avg: $209.72 | Get-in: $120

In the past two weeks, Texas is playing itself out of an NCAA Tournament at-large selection. In a stretch of five games where they face ranked teams, Texas has lost the first three of them against Oklahoma, Iowa State and West Virginia. Things won’t get easier this weekend as the Longhorns enter Allen Fieldhouse desperate for a victory. Kansas has only dropped one game in Lawrence this season, an early-season clash against No. 1 ranked and undefeated Kentucky Wildcats.

2/28/2015 | Iowa State Cyclones at Kansas State Wildcats | Avg: $67.11 | Get-in: $44

Iowa State looks to dust itself off after a disappointing loss on Thursday night. They should have an easier time against Kansas State, who is 7-9 in the conference, but is recently coming off their biggest win of the season, when the Wildcats defeated Kansas on Monday night in Manhattan. The Cyclones need help if they want to break Kansas’ consecutive Big 12 regular season championship streak.

2/28/2015 | TCU Horned Frogs at Oklahoma Sooners | Avg: $47 | Get-in: $10

The Oklahoma Sooners were the team most positively affected by Wednesday’s Iowa State loss. With three games left, the Sooners have Saturday’s game, followed by a game with Iowa State on March 2nd. If they were to win that, the final game of the season against Kansas at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma will be an incredible scene.

If the season has taught us anything, the end of Big 12 regular season play will have plenty of twists and turns left in the final few games. Kansas still has a stranglehold on the top spot, but there haven’t been too many times in recent years where it comes down to the final week of the season. Oklahoma Sooners tickets are super-affordable given the stakes involved in OU’s remaining games, but expect their finale against Kansas to be in huge demand on Totally Tickets if it will decide the conference champ.
