The Student Section’s Pick Six

Good morning, humans. We are at that weird part of the week when people are no longer coming down from the weekend high, yet no one is that excited about the weekend because it still feels so damn far away. Also, it kind of hurts the soul that there isn’t any college football games on until Thursday night. Okay. Enough chit-chat. It is linking time.

College Football

Speaking about that game on Thursday. Yeah, um, about that… Gunner Kiel won’t be playing. This obviously puts the Cincinnati Bearcats behind the eight ball, but considering Kiel’s history of having his body fail on him after being demoralized by defensive opponents, this is probably a wise move.

Spencer Hall writes something. It is pretty hard to explain actually. There are no words in the English language which will do it the proper justice. Simply read the thing.

A Division III receiver caught a football with his feet. That automatically puts him on Rex Ryan’s draft board. Deadspin has video of the feat (get it?!).

SEC Country asked if Florida’s quarterback battle will ever end. It will not. Never. Ever. But only because Chris Leak has run out of eligibility and a miracle has yet to sweep the university.

A column about Mark Richt trying to beat Steve Spurrier and Nick Saban in the same season. For those unaware: defeating both of those guys in the same year is like a WWE wrestler winning the United States and World Heavyweight Championships on the same night. I guess that makes Richt the best version of Seth Rollins?

Our own Bart Doan doing something no one else in the country can; tackling Leonard Fournette. Well, not literally, but he does discuss the likely half-god’s chances of turning pro in something other than playing football for free in college. Bart and I have fundamental disagreements on the issue, but few people on that side of the fence articulate their arguments better than he (waits for check in mail).

Extra Point

But can The Pope fill up the Pontiac Dome with over 100,000 people?

College Basketball

Does this SMU, Larry Brown thing even rate on the things Larry Brown has been accused of scale? What would be funny, except for anyone remotely linked to the SMU program, is if SMU became the last two schools to be given the death penalty. Would be kind of fitting given the Craig James rumors which have floated about for years.

It is going to be a heavy dose of Larry Brown. So continue to hang with me. Rob Dauster of NBC Sports says that SMU’s postseason bang is morally wrong. I have yet had time to fully digest my thoughts on this, but Dauster has been consistent on his opinions of schools getting postseason bans, going back to the entire Syracuse mess last season. It isn’t that he dislikes postseason bans. It is more the timing of them.

In non-SMU news: St. John’s landed their highest rated recruit since Moe Harkless. This is a big deal for Chris Mullin, as he has quickly put together some good recruiting trips.

More SMU stuff! Raphielle Johnson asks if hiring Larry Brown, as well as the baggage he comes with, was worth it. I am going to say no, but that’s easy to say given yesterday’s news.

Dick Vitale goes all in on Larry Brown. I am talking, ALL IN. If it were up to Vitale, he would get a chance to beat Brown up in a cage fight. No one loves college basketball more than the guy who has an unhealthy crush on dandies in diapers, but his passion on this topic is worth your time.

And One

So much Larry Brown stuff. So, so, so much. To feel better about yourself, read stuff about James Dean. Why? Because why the hell not? One of the “10” things you will learn about your mom’s former crush is that he was good at pole vaulting. That is important, you know?
