Launch date for the SEC Network is this Thursday, August 14. Richard Deitsch’s panel tackles that subject and much more in a far-ranging media roundtable. Your mileage may vary, but it’s worth processing what various Sports Illustrated writers have to say about the college football media landscape in a not-that-ordinary year for the sport and its identity on television.

@Midnight features Kentucky’s Cory Johnson on #hashtagwars

In a look at the lighter side of college football, Chris Hardwick’s comedy game show @Midnight surprisingly featured University of Kentucky defensive tackle Cory Johnson on it’s nightly feature called “hashtagwars”.  You may have read about Johnson’s weight fluctuations a couple of days ago over at the Big Lead and this lead to @Midnight’s hashtag war […]

News With Background: Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves Suffers Knee Injury

Thursday night, Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves suffered a knee injury. The severity of that injury isn’t yet known. While we wait for more details, the news immediately calls to mind the injury-ravaged 2013 season which has Will Muschamp on the hot seat this season in Gainesville: Anyone who loves sports wants to see the best […]

When Frank Beamer’s teams average at least four yards per carry, they very rarely lose. Hitting the four-yard barrier carries a profound degree of significance at Virginia Tech, compared to other power-conference programs across the country. The inability to establish the running game in recent years is precisely why the program has struggled.

Frank Beamer Does Something Cool For A Good Cause

To raise awareness and join in the fight against ALS, Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer quite literally did something cool… or perhaps, cold. You can watch the fun here. Video courtesy of HokieSports.com.

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

Poll: Should Power 5 Schools Play Only Power 5 Opponents?

If the so-called “Big 5” autonomy vote today passes (as expected), should the power 5 conferences only play each other? ESPN conducted a poll of the Big 5 coaches last month to ask that very question. Here are the results in a nutshell: In

Heat Map? No — A Hate Map

Reddit has been formulating and posting sports “hate maps” for various leagues over the past few weeks. It’s a fun concept, and though it’s not meant to be taken too seriously, the “hate map” does raise all sorts of fascinating questions about sports fandom as an extension of both demographics and the current condition of […]

The National Football Foundation released a document today highlighting the key rule changes for the 2014 season. For the most part, the changes are designed to correct the mistakes associated with targeting penalties. While I encourage you to read the entire release, Arkansas State fans will want to pay extra close attention to change No. […]

Dave Revsine Talks About His College Football Book With Keith Olbermann

Want to learn more about college football’s early history? Dave Revsine, who moved from ESPN to become the lead studio anchor at Big Ten Network, has written a book chronicling the early years of college football, The Opening Kickoff. Last night, he appeared on Keith Olbermann’s show. Part one: Part two: Yes, yes, yes, a great […]

Report: UNC Whistleblower Accused of Plagiarism

In somewhat of an ironic twist, Mary Willingham — the main whistleblower in the alleged UNC academic scandal — has been accused of plagiarism in her master’s thesis, according to a report from the Raleigh News and Observer. While I encourage you to read the entire article, the report doesn’t look too flattering for Willingham. Rather […]

Kentucky adding a chrome helmet in 2014?

When it comes to helmet designs there are two trends I think are difficult to go wrong with. Helmets with a matte or chrome finish are pretty slick in most cases, and it seems Kentucky is looking to add some shiny flair to their look in 2014.

Unpleasant (But Necessary) Summer Reading: Air Force Athletics

An early-August Sunday is a generally a slow news day in the world of college sports, but not today. Air Force athletic director Hans Mueh (pictured above) is just one of several leaders at the academy who must account for their actions in light of a searing and extensive report by Tom Roeder of the […]

Summer Reading: Consistency Of Punishment

With the announcement from Auburn coach Gus Malzahn that quarterback Nick Marshall will not start the season opener against Arkansas, the topic of internal discipline has once again emerged on the college football web. No, this is hardly the only instance of a player doing something unwise over the course of the summer, but […]
