Thoughts, Observations, and Things To Watch For in Week 11

Week 11 promises to be an exciting one with a docket that includes three matchups between teams ranked in the College Football Playoff’s top 25. Here’s a list of thoughts, observations, and things to watch for this weekend. I know that I’ve said it before, but I’ll mention it again: don’t get too worked up […]

Week 11 Rooting Interests for CFP Contenders

If you have seen our Bubble Watch here at The Student Section, you will remember that we still count 21 teams with a chance at making the College Football Playoff. Some of those teams will have a better chance than others. Some of those teams don’t really have much of a chance at all, and […]

What the Selection Committee Taught Us: Week 10

Here’s an initial reaction to Tuesday night’s latest College Football Playoff rankings, which will occur every week in this space through the end of the regular season: The first thing that really stands out in the selection committee’s rankings this week is Notre Dame. This shouldn’t have been much of a surprise. If you saw […]

5 Things We Learned From Week 10

With a number of big games on the docket, this weekend’s action was easily the most exciting of the season so far. Here are five things we learned from week 10: 5. The Baylor offense will be fine under the leadership of quarterback Jarrett Stidham. Yes, I was pretty sure that this would be the […]

Baylor’s Problems Go Beyond Its Freshman QB

The undefeated Baylor Bears, ranked No. 2 in both major polls, are dealing with a huge problem as they vie for a bid to the College Football Playoff. It’s not the one you’re thinking of. With junior quarterback Seth Russell now shelved for the rest of the season, the focus around Waco has turned to […]

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

College Football Things I think, November 1

There are more college football thoughts, as we get real stuff to argue about this week with the College Football Playoff committee doing its dog and pony act for the first time. 1. Fans should boycott watching the CFB Playoff committee reveal shows. This practice should be adopted not just because ESPN mostly puts out […]

Don’t expect West Virginia to roll over and play dead against TCU

It was supposed to be better than this for West Virginia. Dana Holgorsen is in year five of his existence as WVU’s head football coach, one full recruiting cycle in, which is typically when even the most patient of natives get restless if their internal (realistic) expectations are not likely to be met. The Mountaineers entered […]

Baylor Is Still a College Football Playoff Contender Without Seth Russell

As I was listening to the radio this afternoon, I learned that Baylor quarterback Seth Russell would need neck surgery and would miss the rest of the season. After that, the radio show hosts completely changed their tune. Instead of talking about the anticipated November 27 showdown between Baylor and TCU, they started asking if Oklahoma […]

The 10 Most Important Games Of The Season’s Second Half

The first half of the college football season is over and the final stretch of 2015 is nearing, which means it’s time to determine the 10 most important games left. A number of teams are trying to make their case for a spot in the second College Football Playoff. With 14 undefeated teams remaining, the playoff […]
