SEC squeezed out of title game? Possible. And then … DOOM.

Follow TSS @TheStudentSect On Twitter @TheCoachBart I know Halloween was last week, but I’m going to let you in on a few horrifying realities. The first will make you question humanity in general. The second will make you question the direction of college football. First, did you know there are 5,472,526 people who “Like” Flo […]

The 2014 Bloguin Heisman Poll, week 11

It was Separation Saturday with six games featuring Top 25 teams against each other. Heisman contenders Marcus Mariota, Amari Cooper, Trevone Boykin, and Everett Golson were all involved in these matchups and had a chance to make their mark. Jameis Winston, Dak Prescott and Melvin Gordon had games against teams outside the Top 25. How […]

Sad fan index, week 11

It was Separation Saturday, and with six games pitting Top 25 teams against each other, there were bound to be some sad football fans after this weekend. One team found a way to lose in overtime, one team fumbled a snap as it was driving to try and win the game, and another had a […]

Texas A&M winning, or Auburn losing — which matters more in evaluating the SEC? That’s another topic to argue about in the days and weeks ahead.

The Big 12 Versus The SEC West: One Side Has The Advantage, But The Other Gets More Chances To Change The Debate

Rivalry Week is a few weeks away in college football, but “Scenario Week” is here. After the six top-25 games of Nov. 8 sorted out a lot of issues in college football but created several new problems, it’s necessary to deal with various scenarios one by one. A particularly interesting hypothetical — one which could […]

The TCU-Baylor Debate: Baylor Deserves The Playoff Bid… But That’s Not The Whole Story

The twists and turns of the next four weeks could wipe this scenario off the board, but when the weather gets colder and we approach Thanksgiving, college football editorialists have to discuss certain possibilities, even if they don’t actually unfold. The hypothetical which could soon become reality — and which has everyone in college football […]

TCU and Baylor have already played each other, but both teams will have to face Kansas State in a cluttered and contentious race to the Big 12 finish line. How the Big 12 plays out will have something to do with Notre Dame’s status at the end of the season, provided the Fighting Irish can win out and finish at 11-1.

How (Not) To Argue About The College Football Playoff

After the six top-25 games we witnessed on Saturday, a number of teams have either been eliminated from the College Football Playoff or consigned to the periphery of the chase. More urgently, though, the next college football Saturday is Nov. 15, marking week 12 of the season. It really does seem as though we’ve hit […]

Oregon Overcomes Utah, Moving Closer to the College Football Playoff

One of the most popular conversation topics throughout the week was whether Oregon belongs in the College Football Playoff. On Saturday evening, the Ducks left no doubt that they deserve a spot in the field if they should win out. That’s not to say that Oregon’s win over Utah was perfect. After all, the offense […]

Meet Ohio State. Playoff contender.

On Twitter @TheCoachBart Follow TSS @TheStudentSect Straight, no chaser. Ohio State came into Michigan State’s house, sat down on the couch next to his girl, and started doing shots of whiskey with his arm around her while he sat across the room and fumed. Welcome to the playoff race, Ohio State. The Buckeyes wandered into […]

Alabama Wins in OT, Ohio State and TCU Romp: A Tweetcap From A Memorable Saturday Night

EDITOR’S NOTE: When big games grace the calendar in either college football or college basketball, Student Section contributor and lead basketball writer Scott King will sometimes provide a “tweetcap,” a list of captured tweets that lend color and perspective to the events you just saw on television. This past Saturday in college football rated as […]

Arizona State was a step ahead of Notre Dame for most of a warm Saturday afternoon. Being inhabitants of the desert, the Sun Devils knew how to handle the heat when Notre Dame uncorked a 28-0 run and came close to pulling off an all-time comeback. Arizona State has often allowed big games to slip away over the years. The Sun Devils’ ability to stabilize themselves in the final 6:37 of Saturday’s game showed that they’re made of sterner stuff, a reality created in large part by head coach Todd Graham.

The Power of The Devil Grows: Arizona State Wins A Game It Hasn’t Often Won In The Past

The story of Arizona State’s once-lopsided, then perilously close, then numerically deceptive 55-31 win over Notre Dame on Saturday begins with a photo of Sun Devil Stadium: Two top-10 teams in November, playing for the right to stay in the College Football Playoff race — that setup alone should guarantee a packed house. However, this […]
