Digesting week one of SEC football

Now that Matt and Terry have offered their opinions on college football’s week one performances, it’s time to take a deeper dive into the SEC. Compared to some other conferences, which shall remain nameless, the SEC played a very competitive schedule in week one. First let’s take a look at the two conference matchups…. Texas […]

Terry’s Poll After Week 1

Now that week 1 is in the books (except for Monday night’s epic Louisville – Miami showdown), it’s time to post this week’s top 25 poll. As always, here are a couple of things to remember about my poll: This poll is a projection of where each team will finish the season. I always factor strength of […]

A gassed Clemson defense was no match for Todd Gurley, who ran for 198 yards and 3 TDs.

Terry’s Takeaways From Week 1

I know there are still a couple of games to play in week one, but let’s look back at what transpired on the gridiron this weekend. Takeaways Yes, Ohio State is a Big Ten and national championship contender. While it wasn’t perfect against Navy, the Buckeyes showed that they have what it takes to challenge […]

The Morning After: The Week One Measurement Test

One week. It’s not much, but it’s something. One week. After eight months of pure talk, the nation’s FBS college football teams finally took the field in live games. We should know by now that “it’s only one game,” and that late-August football is a supremely volatile creature. The first three to four weeks of […]

LSU’s win over Wisconsin and Auburn’s win over Kansas State did more to shape perceptions (and resumes) in the 2014 college football season than any other non-conference games. This point cannot be forgotten when a full account of the season is ultimately rendered.

Clemson – Georgia Reaction: The Pruitt Effect

Thanks to a number of offseason incidents, many wondered what to expect from the Georgia defense this fall under the leadership of new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. After Saturday night’s contest against Clemson, there’s no doubt that the Dawg defense will be one of the best units in the country. That’s not to suggest the […]

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

Ohio State – Navy Reaction: Buckeyes Still a Contender in the Big Ten

Despite its lackluster showing against Navy, Ohio State proved that it’s still a contender for Big Ten – and possibly national championship – honors this fall. Make no mistake about it: the Buckeyes were far from perfect today. Navy’s ground game dominated this contest at times, rushing for 370 yards and an average of 5.9 […]

Stay Classy, Oklahoma State Fans

This shouldn’t be seen as representative of most Oklahoma State fans, but a few “Pokes partisans” managed to pull off the “insensitive and very probably foolish since you’re likely to lose big” daily double near the College GameDay set on the morning of the Cowboys’ game against Florida State. Last Call: The Exorcism of Ann Arbor

On Twitter @TheCoachBart It’s hard to tell the exact moment the doctor pulled the sheet over the face of modern Michigan football and announced it DOA. Some would say it was the botched courtship of Les Miles-turned-hiring of Rich Rodriguez. Others would say it was that first losing season since Lyndon Johnson was in office, […]

Arkansas: Will a moral victory be good enough?

The SEC West is the toughest division in football, and Bret Bielema left the Big Ten and a 68-24 career record at Wisconsin to take over an Arkansas Razorbacks team that was in rebuilding mode. In year one, Bielema and the Hogs went just 3-9. The Auburn Tigers proved last season that it is possible to […]

Flashback Friday: A shock delivered in Athens

The Clemson-Georgia rivalry should be bigger than it is and should mean more than it does. From 1977 to 1987, no rivalry in the country was more closely contested (each team went 5-5-1 against the other, and nine of eleven meetings were settled by seven or fewer points) or nationally significant (from 1980 to 1982, […]

Boise needs to find another Zabransky or Moore

On Twitter @TheCoachBart Well, suffice to say the last time Boise State had a coaching change, it went a little better. That year was 2006, and Chris Petersen was the new guy in charge. What ended up ensuing was the zenith of Boise State football to this date: an unbeaten year and a dramatic win […]

Thursday Night Newsmaker: Sumlin The Superstar

Thursday night marked the first full night of college football for the new season. It also marked the debut of the SEC Network as a live-game broadcast outlet. In the first half of the network’s season premiere game, the Texas A&M-South Carolina clash, the booth team of Brent Musburger and (especially) Jesse Palmer heaped praise […]
