Few coaches are going to face as much withering pressure next season as USC’s Steve Sarkisian. Anything less than a Pac-12 South title will be an unquestioned and absolute failure. The lack of a Pac-12 championship — with Oregon no longer having Marcus Mariota — would be a modest disappointment at the very least. Sark can’t squander the considerable talent he’s stockpiled in L.A.

USC – Stanford Reaction: Trojan Defense Makes Plays When it Needs To

Is USC a contender to win the Pac-12 championship? If Saturday’s contest against Stanford is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes. Make no mistake about it: the Trojans were far from perfect in this game. The offense struggled for most of the first half, going three-and-out in its second series while shooting itself […]

Urban Meyer, a superstar head coach and a national figure in college football, spoke at Big Ten Media Days on Monday in Chicago. Big Ten Network did not provide live coverage of his session with the media. ESPN deserves plenty of criticism for how it elevates the SEC and undercuts the levels of exposure it gives to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12. However, when BTN can’t provide live coverage of Meyer, Mark Dantonio, and the coaches of its other big-name programs, the collection of factors that feed into conference bias becomes a lot more complicated. It’s not just about ESPN loving the SEC too much; it’s about BTN and Pac-12 Networks being markedly inadequate when covering their own conferences. Conference bias is, in other words, a two-way street and a multi-source problem. ESPN’s competitors have to do a better job.

Don’t Wear a Blue Shirt to an Ohio State Practice

If you’re in the media, be sure not to wear a blue shirt to an Ohio State practice. No we are not OSU homers, but Brad & I both inadvertently wore blue shirts to practice! Urban took care of it!

David Ash Should Consider Retirement

As media, it’s easy to try and tell an athlete what they should be doing instead of letting them live their own lives. When it comes to intercollegiate athletics, it is way too easy to assume this hectoring, lecturing pose. With that being said, I’m probably about to adopt this pose with the very next […]

FLORIDA STATE SURVIVES: THE WEEK ONE MANTRA IN EVIDENCE

You’re going to read a lot more about week one of the new college football season in the coming days at The Student Section. After eight months of speculation, live games have returned to our world, and the annual vastness of the offseason makes week one feel like a sensory overload. You’ll get plenty of […]

Eventually, Diesel and his pals need to sack up.

Muffed Punts: Apparently the season starts this week

On Twitter @TheCoachBart Last column of this sort before the season starts. It’s been a great tradition. All three of them so far and all. Traditions are funny things. I have no idea how many times something needs to happen to be a “tradition.” In dating, it’s always useful after basically you don’t want to […]

Editorial Section: Three Big-Picture College Football Topics

GAME WEEK! GAME WEEK! GAME WEEK! We made it, everybody! Tomorrow, we’re going to talk about the 2014 season precisely because it’s GAME WEEK! However, before we devote all our energy to what’s in front of us, it’s important to gather ourselves for a moment and take stock of what’s now in the past, starting […]

The trouble with Smurfs … and writing off the B1G

On Twitter @TheCoachBart Working under the assumption that the majority of the readership here hasn’t seen Smurfs 2 … which may or may not be a reasonable thought … here’s the plot summary: Basically, the movie centers around Smurfette being captured, causing Smurf Village to go into an uproar. The assumption for kids is that […]

Record roasting do-everything quarterback for Navy, Keenan Reynolds, is one of the five that cannot be afforded to be lost to their teams.

The Indispensables: 5 Players Teams Can’t Live Without

On Twitter @TheCoachBart In case you live under a rock, apparently Braxton Miller, all-world Ohio State quarterback, won’t be playing football again this year because of a re-bummed shoulder. All is not lost in Buckeye land, mostly because Urban Meyer coaches, and the only time you worry about an Urban Meyer coached team is when […]

Braxton Miller could reportedly miss the entire 2014 season

How about this news for an August bombshell?  One of the Heisman favorites and 2-time Big Ten player of the year Braxton Miller may miss the entire 2014 season.  The Ohio State quarterback reportedly re-injured his right shoulder in practice on Monday afternoon according to Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch.  While there are no […]

The Man Who Helped Chip Sarafin

Michael Sam had already played his last down of college football when he publicly announced he was gay. Chip Sarafin of Arizona State has made yet another piece of history in American sports by becoming (what appears to be) the first openly gay college football player we know of. The story, in Compete magazine, is […]
